Essays by Mari Mori

When I was reading Aoko Matsuda, I came across a proper noun, “Mori Mari”, who is a renowned essayist and Mori Ogai’s daughter. One key word which is at the core of this collection of essays is “beauty”. Her unflinching sense of aesthetics is a measure of everything. That strong attachment partly derives from his father, who had an acute sense towards characters, both kanji and kana. Ogai never ever allowed the new kana orthography, believing the old one’s elegance would vanish. Mari is convinced that the underlying element that could lead to innovation or new discoveries is this sense of beauty. I was totally captured by her style whose usage of punctuation is quite distinctive.
